I’m sure the Big News is the new edition of D&D that’s coming soon (TM).
I took a skim through the initial pdf playtest release of character creation options, and … well, “new edition” would be strong wording, I think. To me, at least, it feels more like 5.5e than a 6e. Yes, there are changes, but not really anything fundamental, unless I’m Missing Something Entirely (do read the links below - some brilliant folks have done some deep dives on a few key mechanics that will be different in the new edition).
Here’s the thing: no matter what edition of D&D you, the DM, choose to run, or even if you run other games, some things hold true and never change:
You set the scene. The players decide what their characters will do and declare their actions. You adjudicate the actions, using common sense, the particular game system’s rules, and sometimes dice to help you figure out what happens.
Everything else? Your favorite poison edition? That’s just gravy, flavor, and “game feel".
Those core things, no matter what system or edition you run, is up to you.
Have you checked out the new playtest stuff? I’d love to know what you think!
